Motorcycle Repair: 05 Lowrider blowing ECM and Fuel Pump Fuses, caesars head state park, dyna lowrider

Question
My buddy and I were riding up to Caesars Head State Park on Saturday and my bike ran great all the way up there. When we were going to head back down, my 2005 Dyna Lowrider FXDLi (8000 miles) would turn over but would not start. I checked the fuses and both the Fuel Pump and ECM 15a fuses were blown. I pulled the spare and the taillight fuse and replaced them and it fired up. I made it half way home to an Auto Parts store and bought a 10 pack of 15a fuses. I went through all 10 in my attempt to make it home. I made it but blew 10 ECM and Fuel Pump Fuses. Has this occurred to anyone else or does anyone have an idea of what could be the cause..........Any help would be greatly appreciated......Thanks

Answer
Hi John,

In my experience, Harleys' ECMs' are pretty bullet proof, however, I know they HAVE had issues with the fuel pumps inside the fuel tank.

Best guess is one of the wires powering the pump has come loose or freyed from vibration, and has grounded itself to the base of the pump. I would pull the pump imediately if not sooner before an arc .

If the fuel pump fuse blows, chances are the ECM fuse will blow when the odd fuel pressure occurs which in turn could change the ECM's mapping all by itself. This is more than likely just a "fail safe"

Hope this helps!
