Motorcycle Repair: 87 fzr1000 miss at idle and low rpm, battery cables, fzr1000

Question
I have an 87 fzr1000 that has a miss at idle and low rpm (under around 4-5000 rpm) The number 3 pipe is approx100 degrees cooler at idle, and has 120 psi compression as the other 3 are around 125-130. The 3 cyl is getting fuel also, not a plugged low speed jet. Does this sound like a valve problem to you, I've heard of old yamahas having leak by on valves.

Answer
Dave,

-Compression is a little low, but could be
other problems.
-Have you tried a timing light on cylinder 3,
maybe you can see if the ignition is steady.
-The spark plug cap might have too much
resistance, should be around 5000 ohms.
-Check around your ignition connectors,
a loose wire or corroded connection can
cause problems.
-Make sure battery cables are tight and clean.
-Try some fuel additive like "Seafoam"
maybe the valves are sticking or carboned up.
-An old trick to clean carbon is
warm engine up and get a spray bottle
full of water. Spray the water into the
intake slowly (water doesn't compress)
until the bottle is empty. This creates
steam which sometimes breaks down the
carbon deposits in the engine.
-If all else fails it may be time for
a valve fix or top end job.
