Motorcycle Repair: battery keeps dying, dead cells, auto parts store

Question
I have a 1993 Kawasaki Vulcan750.  The battery is dead.  When I put a charger on it it fires up right away.  As soon as I remove the cables it dies.  If I hold 3,000rpm and remove the cables it stays running but the tach red lines but the engine running doesn't change.  What is wrong?

Answer
Sounds like a charging issue.Remove the battery from the bike and charge it.Make sure it will hold a charge. Then load test the battery and see if you have any dead cells.Your auto parts store will test the battery.Replace if needed.Install it back into the bike and test the charging system. With a volt meter set on 12 volts DC Start the bike ( It should run with a charged battery )Place the red lead from your meter on the positive post of the battery and the black lead on a good ground. If the charging system is working a reading of 14 or more volts is good.If you don't get this reading get back to me and we will check the charging system.I think the tack will straiten out with this repair.
