Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Nighthawk 700 hesitation, loss of power, vacuum hose, open throttle

Question
hi.  i'm experiencing hesitation, loss of power at wide open throttle.

highway high speed riding with 4,5 and 6 gear roll-ons when cruising at about 70-75 mph   ---   when i give it full throttle it cuts out and feels as if there is no more power to be had....it's as if i'm hitting a wall or as if there is a governor on it!  i haven't been able to get up over 80-85 mph without this happening and the bike should definitely go faster than that.

getting up to 70 mph is usually fine.  i can feel the rush of power from about 8k rpm that this bike is known for.  BUT occasionally i can tell that it doesn't seem to be delivering all the power it (the rush isn't as strong as it was at the last stoplight) and there is some slight hesitation, again at high RPMs, wide open.  i'd say one out of every four launches feels short on power with some slight hesitation.

any ideas what could be causing this?  it's odd to me that 0-70 with wide open throttle is USUALLY fine but 75 and up with wide open throttle it to cuts out, hesitates and provides well below normal performance (can't get up over 85 mph). i should also note that once i back off, it will run smooth again BUT a couple of times the bogging, hesitation has continued even after i backed off, only smoothing out after i've decelerated and/or down shifted in order to build revs again.

carbs/fuel flow seem to be obvious culprit.  any way the charging system would cause high rpm hesitation like this?

any advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Answer
Ryan, I think I had one of these the other day....

Probable causes:
Restricted fuel screen inside the fuel tank (remove the petock)

Petcock vacuum diaphragm failure. Small pinholes will cause vacuum loss on the petcock, restricting the fuel flow. Wide open throttle settings cause low vacuum signals, compounding the problem. Leaking vacuum hose would also be a part in this issue.

Fuel tank venting issues, causing partial vapor lock in fuel supply.

DO check the spark plugs and replace if over 10k miles. Spark plug caps should be around 5k ohms and all should match fairly closely.

A low battery or failing charging system will cause cutout at high revs, as well. Batteries only last about 2 years. Check voltage before and after a ride or take meter with you to verify full charging battery.

Parts for vacuum controls are usually available in aftermarket, as well as from HONDA.
