Motorcycle Repair: Wont Start!, wd 40, new spark

Question
Hey i just bought a 1982Yamaha maxim 400 and when i got it ran perfectly. Then i took it home and now it won't start. I charged the battery and it still wont go. There is some open wiring on the handlebars that i think may have been tampered with by the previous owner. If you can think of anything that might be helpful it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Answer
Jordan,

-do the basics first, check for spark,
if no spark, check the fuses, kill button,
fix up any bad wires. Check connectors
for corrosion.
if it looks okay move on to the fuel
system.
-Try some carb cleaner or wd-40 in
the carb intake, see if it will fire on it.
If it fires, you may have a faulty
fuel valve or plugged gas line, filter
or carb float valves.
Try some fresh gas and possibly
new spark plugs.
Check the air filter.
