Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): No spark, new magnatron, briggs stratton, cylinder ohv engine

Question
QUESTION: Single cylinder ohv engine briggs & stratton, friend asked me to get running.
When I got it I was told that the Magnatron was bad and had been removed.
So I purchased new one , installed, got a spark ,what I think was a weak
spark, anyway while trying to start and having a fuel problem, soaked plug. I
removed plug, cleaned and reinstalled.  Thats when i noted that there was no
spark, since I found a wiring problem with the shut off (being energized from
a remote start/control box) which was miss wired. Corrected that. > Cranks
fast with electric start, can not get a spark, thought that the short may have
damaged the Magnatron.  So I purchased another new Magnatron, installed,
and again no spark, shimmed to .10", screw flywheel magnet seems
substantial.  I'm stuck, 2 Magnatron not working? Disconnected shut off
wire,and still no luck!
What could be my problem?

ANSWER: Hello Patrick:

>>With New Ign Coils/Magnetron Coils; if they are Not Firing and the Shut Off Wire is Disconnected from them, then
>>Turn the Coil Over, Gap and Secure it and then Check for Fire.
>>I have had Problems with the Ign Coils being Marked Wrong and have been Turning them Over to get the Correct Winding Rotation on the Coil so they will Fire the Plug.
>>Coils have to have the Coil Windings the Correct Direction when the Magnetic Field Passes over the Coil Pick ups or the Coil will Not Generate the Current to Fire the Built in Module that Fires the Coil.
>>***Anytime a Magnet that is Set to the Correct Distance from the Armature/Ign Coil Pickups, the Armature/Ign Coil will Fire the Plug if it is Good. The Armature/Ign Coil Gap should be .020in between the Flywheel and the Armature/Ign Coil Pickups. You can Use a Side Panel from a Drink Carton (Mt Dew, Pepsi, ect) and Place it Between the Flywheel and the Armature/Ign Coil. Allow the Magnets on the Flywheel to Pull the Armature/Ign Coil Together and then Tighten the Armature/Ign Coil Bolts. Carefully Turn the Engine while Pulling the Cardboard Out from between the Armature/Ign Coil Pickups. The Armature/Ign Coil is Now Properly Set.***
>>If After you Turn the Coil Over the Plug Does Not Fire, then make Sure the Plug is Good. If the Plug is Good, then
>>You have Purchased a Bad Coil. It is Rare, but I have had as Many as 5 Coils Bad in 1 Shipment.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Only one side up is possible, plug wire sets high on magneto, set to .10",
spec. is .008-.012" , if I open gap will to .20" will that help?  Magnetos came
from 2 different vendors. Any more suggestions??  Any way of testing
magnetos off engine?  Vendor won't warranty magnetos so I hate to eat
another.
Thanks
Patrick

ANSWER: Hello Again Patrick:

>>OK.
>>I Screwed Up. What are the Model Numbers Off this Engine.
>>It is Possible this Engine has a Point Set Under the Flywheel.
>>I Don't get Many Questions About them Anymore and Almost Forgot there are Still some in Use.
>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. If this is a Briggs and Stratton  Engine, then you can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine.
>>The Following is the Instruction File I Made for Removing the Flywheel and Replacing the Point Set of Most Older Mower/Blower Engines. It is the Basics and if you have a Question, Please Ask. Any Input to Make this File Better is Appreciated.
>>***Disconnect the Coil Wire from the Spark Plug. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover).
>>Remove the Coil.
>>Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model).
>>Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel.
>>Tighten the Puller. Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft.
>>On Some Models you Can Not Use a Puller and Must Use a Pry Bar and a Pipe Cap that is Slightly Larger than the Crankshaft. Place the Pipe Cap Over the Crankshaft to Protect it. Place the Pry Bar Under the Thick Section of the Flywheel and Pull Up Against the Flywheel. >>**BE CAREFUL  DO NOT PUT A HOLE IN THE BLOCK UNDER THE FLYWHEEL** >>Now Hit the Pipe Cap that is on the Crankshaft (covered with the Pipe Cap). Repeat the Procedure Until the Flywheel can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft.
>>*** Be Sure you have the Flywheel Torqued to the Proper Torque (I require the Model and Spec/Type Numbers Off the Engine to Provide the Proper Torque) and Set the Coil Gap to .020in.. A Cardboard Side Panel from a Drink Carton will Work for Setting the Coil Clearance.
>>The Point Set is Under a Cover Under the Flywheel. The Point Gap is Set by Slowly Turning the Engine By Hand and Holding the Point Set Plunger with your Finger. When you Feel the Plunger is at the Outer Most Point of its Movement, then Stop Turning the Engine and Using a Blade Style Feeler Gauge, Set the Point Set at .008in - .012in. .
>>On Tecumseh Engines, Set the Point Set into Place and Snug the Set Screw. Turn the Engine Until the Crankshaft Lobe that Actuates the Point Set is Fully Up on the Point Set Ear. Using a Flat Screw Driver, Open and Close the Point Set Until a Blade Feeler Gauge will Slide between the Contacts. Set the Gap to .015in and Lock the Point Set Down.  **Do Not Loosen or Move the Point Set/Stator Plate. This is Not Really Required and it is Easier if Performed the way I Described and Not the Way the Tecumseh Manuals Suggest.**
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: Don't think there is any points under flywheel , that would need to be a wire
coming out to coil, this has magneto with one connection,a kill wire to
ground out mag.  B&S single cylinder, ohv with a vertical crankshaft/ head
piston horizonal.  Armature - Magent B&S Pt# is 795315 I think a Vanguard
engine.
Thanks for help

Answer
Hi Patrick:

>>You are Correct. The Part Number is for a Magnetron Coil.
>>Usually a Dealer will See 2 or 3 Bad Ign Coils, Not a Customer.
>>If you are Sure the Test Plug is Good and the Plug Ground to the Engine is Good, then the Coils need to be Taken to a Small Engine Service Center and be Tested.
>>A Coil Tester is Required to Test a Magnetron Coil Off the Engine.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
