Motorcycle Repair: Motorcycle that has been sitting., kawasaki vulcan 1500, gas tank

Question
I'm looking into purchasing a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 with fuel injection.  The catch is that the bike has not been ridden.  It only has 10 miles on it and has sat in a garage for the past 5 years.  What potential damage could have been caused to the bike from sitting unused for so long?  Are there things that I can easily check, or is this a potential disaster?

Answer
Aaron,
probably the worst thing is old gas drying up
and causing problems. The battery will need
replacing, Could be rust in the gas tank,
this you can check out. If it was stored
in a cool dry garage, damage may be minimal
to rubber parts and tires etc.
Has it been started yet? If not,
I would add a little oil to the cylinders
and turn it over a bit.
If you run some fresh gas through and change
the oil, check the air filter,
and see if it runs okay would be a start.
There may be rust on brake pistons, pads
and discs. Again it depends on the place it was
stored. It should be started and given a good
run to guarantee it's condition and make
sure the fuel system is functioning okay.
