Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Honda Shadow vlx, starter clutch, motorcycle batteries

Question
Question... My starter works only intermitenly(sp). More often than not, it doesn't work... The headlight works fine and properly dims when I try to start the bike. It will also "jump" easily with 10 feet of rolling. Should I look for a problem with the starter itself? or with wires going to or from the starter? Is this a job that a newby like myself, who has limited abilities, should bring to a shop?

Answer
Andrew... First find out if your battery is any good. Motorcycle batteries only last about 2 years in general service. Have the battery fully charged, then load tested.

When it acts up, you can try to jump start the starter motor directly to see if that is the problem. You don't mention how many miles are on it, so I can't assess if other wear items, like the starter clutch may be at fault.

You can see some views of the parts involved in your bike, by going to bikebandit.com site and check the OEM parts option. Then choose HONDA, the year and then the model.

If you have a good battery or install one and the problem remains, then probably a shop can sort out the actual component failures quicker and more efficiently than you can, if you don't have proper tools and test equipment.
