Motorcycle Repair: yamaha virago 535 headlight, filament bulbs, check ebay

Question
I have a headlight problem and that is the headlight and instrument light do not come on when key is turned on, however the front signal lights come on and stay on, if I use the hand switch to indicate a turn they act normally. I have checked the fuses and the headlight bulb and used contact cleaner on electrical connections. Any help or other directions that I could do to help solve this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.

Answer
Eric, not really much of a HONDA question is it? When you ask questions, please give ALL the model information, like the year of manufacture and if it is a California model or not. They are NOT all the same from the beginning to end of production, so the year is vital.

I suggest getting a good wiring diagram for your machine, so you can trace the wire colors and any control modules that may be in the circuits. From my very limited Yamaha experiences, they change wire colors and have all kinds of magic black boxes that monitor the lights, etc. Check Ebay for Yamaha repair books.

I believe that the front signal lights you see are supposed to be on all the time. If you pull the lenses, there will be double filament bulbs in there. The idea, at least with a Honda, is that they are running lights to increase visibility, then are cancelled out when either:
a. The high beam is selected
b. The turn signals are selected for either side.

If you have confirmed that the light bulbs are all functional for the headlight and instrument lights, then the wiring and/or control boxes are the source of the problem.  Go to www.bikebandit.com and search the online microfiche illustrations. The electrical sections have a lot of control units and modules listed.

If you have power at the handlebar switches and the components are all goood then something inbetween is the issue. Probably a control module.
