Motorcycle Repair: New battery drained immediately, suzuki gsx250, negative cable

Question
Hi there,
Just placed a new battery into a suzuki GSX250, I started it a couple of times (the bike idled for about 5mins in total) and the unfortunately didn't started/ride it for 2 weeks and by then the battery was dead. What is likely to be draining the battery and is there some simple things to check?

Answer
Hamish,

-the battery should be charged up slowly
when new with a low amp charger, (2 amp)

-Once charged disconnect the negative
cable and put a test light between the negative post on
battery and the negative cable.
-If it lights, you have a drain,
a small drain may be normal but
you can pull the fuses one at a time
to see what circuit the drain is on. Then you have to
disconnect or examine those devices or wiring until
you find the drain suspect.
You might want to check the
charging output later as well,
you should have about 14 volts or so at
3000 rpm.
