Motorcycle Repair: 1973 CB350, plug caps, repair knowledge

Question
I'm $150 in the hole.  I've got my bike broken down completely, with basically no motorcycle repair knowledge whatsoever...only the will to learn by bangin my head against a wall.   Yeah it's stupid, but this is where I find out whether or not I love bikes...or the idea of them.

I'd prefer to re-build the engine from the bottom up.  Do you know of a place where I can send it?  DO guys rebuild these engines anymore, or am I on my own.

Ultimately I'm looking for information.  I feel like this will be step one.  Once I know the engine is getting rebuilt, I'll go to work on the body.  I don't have anyone positive or knowledgeable around, so I'm coming to you.

Thanks for making yourself available.

Answer
Joel,

I doubt it would be worth having a shop rebuild it,
even if you could find someone willing.
Look online for a service manual, that's
the best place to start and will save you
alot of grief if something gets assembled wrong.
You won't be able to rebuild the crankshaft
as that is a highly technical and difficult
procedure. If you remove the head, cylinders
and pistons, you can see if the rods feel
tight on the crankshaft. Maybe just
a top end rebuild and examine the clutch etc.
is all it needs. Clean the carbs, new points,
condensors and plug caps, spark plugs.
The cam chain and tensioners should be replaced
or examined closely for wear.
It all can be done if you have the time, patience
and $$$.
