Motorcycle Repair: 1987 CBR1000 transmission, trans gears, honda hurricane

Question
I have a 1987 CBR1000F honda hurricane.  the transmission is partially not working.  I think that i can get it into 3rd or 4th gear but nothing lower.  Do i need a whole new transmission and if I do can I get a transmission from a newer CBR1000 model and it still work on my bike?
thanks

Answer
Jared,
it is possible the transmission is damaged,
but another possibility is the shifter mechanism.

-The shifter is a rachet mechanism that
turns the shift drum which in turn moves the shift
forks which slide the trans gears into place.

-Any of these components could be faulty and should
be checked. Often gears, forks and other parts
can be replaced without replacing the whole transmission.
Some of the parts on newer CBR's are the same part
numbers, some are not.
I would suggest the need for a shop manual if you
plan to take on this job.
