Motorcycle Repair: firing problem crf 80, stator coils, honda crf 80

Question
I have a honda crf-80 that is not firing. I need to know how to ohm out the pick-up and stator and coil. On the flywheel where the pick-up is located there is a raised metallic thing should this be magnetic? If so that is probably my problem. Thanks

Answer
Steve,
is there any spark with a new plug?
The pickup tab on the flywheel is just
metal, it may or may not have any magnetism
on it. The edge of it triggers the pickup
and the timing advance changes depending
on which edge it checks.
At high speed it detects the leading edge
to advance the ignition and detects the trailing
edge at low speed so ignition fires later.
Pickup coils run around 50-300 ohms, CDI
charge coils about 100-300 ohms. Primary
coil wire about 3-5 ohms, Secondary coil
about 6000-13000 ohms, and plug caps about
5000 ohms or less.
Check your kill switch and possibly a dirty
flywheel or stator coils.
The magnetism is important on the inside
of the flywheel where it generates power
to charge the CDI unit.
