Motorcycle Repair: 1992 Harley Electra Glide Generator, ac volts, stator

Question
QUESTION: My battery went bad, so I replaced it with new one. That one goes dead and I have to charge it. Is there a generator on this model and if so where is it located?

ANSWER: You have a stator, not a generator. It is located under the primary cover. To test it, first get the bike running and at the batery you should be showing around 13.5 volts at 2000 RPM.
Let me know what you get.

QUESTION: The voltage was 12.46 when I hooked up the terminals, but dropped to 12.25V after starting.  It came up to aprox 12.35 after a moment.  The throttle didn't appear to (at 2000rpm or even 3000rpm)change the voltage. I am now leaning toward the voltage regulator.  Is there a way to test it?  I don't think the stator has any parts to wear out, do they?  Thanks, Bill

Answer
What you do is test the stator. Check at the plug of the stator with a OHM meter for ground. Then, start the bike and at the stator you should get around 60 AC volts coming out. If it passes both tests then the regulator is bad. If it doesnt then the stator is bad. there is no test for the regulator. On the stator, it can short out.
Good luck and happy riding
