Motorcycle Repair: motor cycle ignition, plug caps, honda cl350

Question
I have just bought a 1970 honda cl350. Every thing works, mechanical, lights, and gears. Problem, no spark. How do I test the Coils and stader.

Answer
Keith,
chances are it needs the points cleaned and set or replaced.
They are under the top left cover on the engine with the
two screws in it.  The coils are likely okay,
but you can test the resistance on the primary wire,
should be about 4-6 ohms. Check the spark plug
caps for 5k ohms. Make sure battery is fully charged
and cables/fuses are good. Also check the
condensors for a good ground on the coil bracket.
You need a battery to get spark on these bikes.
The stator is only used for charging.
Set the point gap to about .014"
The points should just break open when the "F"
mark on the rotor lines up with the mark on the engine case.
You can adjust the gap slightly if necessary
to get the timing set on the marks.
