Motorcycle Repair: 1987 700 magna, chain tensioners, cam chain

Question
Is there a way to tighten the oil pump drive chain? and how much slack should be in it?

Answer
Chuck,
the chain is just replaced during rebuilds.
It has no adjustment. It should have 1/4"
to about 3/8" ideally. If you have engine noise
it is more likely low oil volume to the cylinder
head and cams or cam chain noise.
The cam chain tensioners can stick and fail
to keep the chain tight.
Some Honda bulletins mentioned enlarging
oil passages to the head to 1mm for increased
oil volume to cams, also they are less
likely to plug up.
It is wise to keep the oil very clean on the
magnas.
