Motorcycle Repair: 92 Virago Headlight Failure, virago xv750, fuse box

Question
I have a 92 Yamaha Virago XV750. The headlight is no longer working. I've changed the lamp and checked the fuses, but nothing. About 6 months ago, I noticed that, intermittently, it wouldn't turn on when I started the motorcycle, but would start working as soon as I put it in gear. That lasted about am month and then it worked fine, so I forgot about it. The other day it wouldn't come on when I started it and can't seem to trace the cause.

Answer
Greg,
the cause is usually up in your starter button assembly.
A red/yellow wire goes from the fuse box to
the starter button assy, and then a light blue wire
goes to power the headlight.
These bikes turn off the headlight when starting
to save power. If you want to see if the button switch
is bad, try running power to the light blue
wire, your headlight should come on if the bulb
and the grounds are okay. Ground is the black wire
on the headlight.
You may be able to clean the contacts in the switch
or replace.
