Motorcycle Repair: 1983 midnight virago 750, starter clutch, fly wheel

starter does and always has made bad grinding noise took to sho ,they said this model is known for doing that and that no need to replace, cold mornings are worse , annoying and takes longer when cold to start because u have to release starter button due to grinding, but allways starts for last few years, sounds to me like a cars bendixs grinding on fly wheel,ever heard of this?

-yes, you are exactly right. The gear gets flat and it
doesn't engage properly.

-You can replace the gear OR
you can try this:

-You will have to remove the left cover to work on this,
if you pull the starter out you may knock the
clip off into the crankcase.
