Honda Repair: Honda Accord 2.2 CDTi, cv axles, wheel alignment

Question
Hi,
I have recently purchased the above vehicle which was originally built in November 2004. When I am accelerating between 50-60mph, there is a violent side to side vibration which disappears outside this range. It only occurs when accelerating. I have had all 4 wheels balanced, and recently replaced 2 worn tyres, but this has not helped. I have also tried swapping the front and back wheels, but still no improvement.
The car has done 118,000 miles, but the engine was replaced with a brand new one about 10,000 miles ago (as the timing chain broke, and Honda replaced the engine free of charge). I have only owned the vehicle for the last 2,000 miles and the problem has been there ever since I bought it.
The vibration does not appear to be coming through the steering, but through the whole car. The only cheap thing I haven't tried is the wheel alignment, but I have been told that this is unlikely to be the problem.

Can you help me please?

Thanks for your help.

Charlie

Answer
Charlie, my first guess would have been the wheel balancing. Then rotation front to back. Still no change? Hmmm... has to be in the drive train somewhere. Start by elevating the Honda on a 4-point lift tall enough too visually and physically inspect the front suspension from underneath the vehicle. CV axles have been known to cause this type of vibration. When inspecting the CV axles they may look in good shape but have damage inside the boot. Unfortunately there is no way of telling if the axle is bad you would just have to afford the cost per axle first then re-evaluate with freeway speeds. If you decide to go this route start by replacing the passenger side first then evaluate. No change? Drivers side then evaluate. Still no change? I would then move to a motor or transmission mount? Try putting your spare tire on the front then evaluate. Switch it from the driver to passenger side. Thats alot of information for you too try for now keep in touch
