Motorcycle Repair: Changing standard point ignition to electronic ignition, harley service, point ignition

Question
I have a 1977 Harley Davidson Sportster. I purchased a screaming eagle elctronic conversion kit from Harley Davidson. The kit consisted of a module which replaced the points a wire which was connected to the coil, and a rotor. When installing the kit do I disconnect the weights and spring from the spark advance. I did push the camstop roll pin in the slot when I installed the advance assembly. I was able to start the bike but the bike pops very loud like it is out of time. When I try to adjust the timming the bike will smooth out at 2000 rpms but when it returns to idle it pops very loud. Is this due to the fact that the advance retards the timing at the lower rpm? The directions on the kit tell you to refer to the harley service manual. My manual does not have anything about electronic ignition it is a 1970 to 1978 manual. If you could give me instructions on installing the kit and tell me what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You in Advance Bob

Answer
I have never used one of these kits, but I should be able to help you.
The rotor takes the place of the rotor in the weights. Make sure you put it in correctly. It only fits one way. It has a flat on it and a pin in the weights. Also, make sure the weights work properly. Do not remove the springs. that is what advances the timing. Start the bike and get it idling at normal idle. Now slowly turn the rotor until the bike smooths out.
After that you will need a timing light to properly time it, but it should be close.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
