Motorcycle Repair: starting bike, starter button, solenoid

81 yamaha 920rh virago chain drive has key but have to use a screwdriver on the solenoid to start. there is two wires coming off the solenoid red/white and blue/white.if i touch the r/w to the pos. batterie post and the b/w to the nev. post. the motor will try to start.i have had it start this way. how can i start the bike with out doing this. just about all the wires have been cut off. no wires going to the handlebar control.in need of help. thanks.

Randy,
normally the solenoid wires go to a small relay
box under the seat and from there to the other
circuits including the starter button.
You would have to spend alot of time with a
shop manual or circuit diagram to rewire this.
If it starts by connecting the solenoid wires,
as you mentioned, why not just get a switch
or button and connect it to the solenoid directly?
Just ground the b/w wire and hook one side of the
button to the solenoid r/w and the other side
to fused battery power.
