Motorcycle Repair: no electrical power, rear fender, softail custom

Question
QUESTION: I'm working on a 1990 softail custom that has no electrical power. New battery but no lights, turn signals, horn, won't turn over. Ive checked the main relay on the front of the rear fender splash guard and it ohms out good, I've even tried to bypass the relay and  and still doesn't get any juice. I do get power to the light brown wire at the switch.

ANSWER: Use a test light and start by seeing if you have power going to the ignition switch and when you turn it on if you have power going away from it. Sounds like the switch itself.

QUESTION: I use a multi meter and get volts to the brown wire. As soon as I move the switch to any position I lose voltage to the switch at the brown wire and all other wires to/from the switch.

Answer
Locate the hot wire to the switch. Should be tan. Remove the other wires. Now turn the switch on. If the power remains on, the attach each wire, one at a time. If you lose power then you know what wire the short is in.
Also, When the power goes off, trace back to the battery from the tan wire and disconnect the breaker to see if you have power on both sides
