Motorcycle Repair: Fuel problems?, kawasaki zx7r, charcoal filter

Question
Hey, Wayne.  Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.  Hopefully you'll be able to help me out, despite my question being a little out of your stated expertise.

Preface: I'm in the military, and I recently moved from Hawaii to Texas and had to ship my bike.  Dumb me, I didn't put any stabilizer in the tank when I shipped it.  The little bit of gas that was in it is still in there (I couldn't get the very last bit out) and I filled it up with premium and a little carb cleaner.  It wasn't run from around November until this May.

I started it up and it ran fine for about twenty minutes.  Luckily (for me) I was letting it sit and run while I suited up for a run to the gas station.  After that twenty minutes, though, it pretty much died.  Now instead of sounding like an angry bee, it sounds a lot like a lawn mower.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I was talking to my old man about it (he's a Ford mechanic by trade for the last twenty years or so) and he said that I should change my fuel filter (this is what I figured the problem was also).  So I went and got a filter and swapped it out.

My problem is that I'm not 1000% sure that it was the fuel filter that I changed.  The "filter" (and the guy at the shop said that what I brought in was a filter) had four places where hoses could be attached.  One came from/to the tank into the bottom, one went from/to the tank at the top, one went to the carb, and one went to what I'm assuming is a charcoal filter.  However, I was looking at the gas lines today and there's something else that looks like it could be a fuel filter also.

My bike is a 1997 Kawasaki ZX7R.  The "filter" that I replaced was on the right side, under the seat, between the battery and the gas tank.  The "filter" that I'm not sure IS a filter is in the same spot on the left side.  I feel a little retarded for asking such a simple question, but with three mortgages right now I can't spring for the Hayne's manual for the time being.  Couple that with the fact that everyone on the internet (except apparently you guys) is so focused on making a buck that I can't find a decent help site.  Hopefully you guys can shed some light on the situation.

Answer
Rich,
I think you changed your fuel separator, it is for the emissions,
to vent the gas tank of vapors and collect any raw fuel
that may collect. The fuel filter should be sitting in a
little rubber holder that hooks on the frame. Not the one
with wires on it, that's your fuel pump.
You might want to see if fuel is getting to the carbs,
check for spark, see if the plugs are okay.
Sometimes the carbs get gummed up while sitting,
may need to clean the jets.
