Motorcycle Repair: Engine Identification, ac volts, piston size

Question
Mike, I just purchased a 1998 custom built softail.  I am trying to identify the engine size.  It has a S&S Super Stock engine casing, number Y2235 and Revteck top end. Do you know of any way to identify the size without tearing down the engine and sizing the cylinders?  Is there a good way to test the alternator to check if it is operating properly.  Thank-you for your help.

Jon

Answer
The only way is to pull the cylinders to measure the piston size and measure the stroke.
You can test the stator with a OHM meter and AC volt meter. Unplug the regulator and test the plug on the stator with a OHM meter for ground at both pins. Then test both pins. Then start the bike and at the stator test for AC volts. Should be around 60 volts at 2000 RPM
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
