Motorcycle Repair: odometer, harley davidson, rigid frame

yes i have a 1997 harley davidson it is a custom rigid frame but the motor and all of the parts are harley it is a 1340 evo my question is probably 3 months after i bought the bike the speedometer and the mileage odometer quit working the tac on it works because when you turn the switch on all the lights on the column come on and the tac go all the way up i just need to know how to fix it so the miles will start reading they have stopped at 260 and will not keep rolling thanks i hope you can reply

I am going to assumn you have a cable driven speedo. First, remove the speedo. With  the front wheel off the ground, spin the wheel. Watch the end of the cable. If it turns then you have a bad speedo and it needs replaced. If it doesnt, then you either have a broken cable or a bad speedo drive unit. To get to the unit you have to remove the front wheel and the cable unscrews out of it.
