Motorcycle Repair: regulator and stator, ac volts, stator

1996 custom soft tail. How do you check regulator and stator with ohms meter and what kind of readings should I get  

Answer
First, you need to test the stator. At the pins you should get infinite OHMs. test from one pin to ground and you should get the same thing. Next, if it passes then you need to test for volts. Whith the bike running and at the pins of the stator you should get around 60 AC volts at 2000 RPM. If the stator passes the above tests then the voltage regulator is bad
