Towing Issues: 2003 GMC Sierra on tow dolly, tow dolly, gmc sierra

Question
Does it matter which way I tow my 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 Ext Cab RWD on a tow dolly? Frontwards or backwards?  I've read some of your previous responses and believe that since my vehicle is RWD, I should tow it backwards, or forwards with the drive trans disconnected.  However, other experts on the same site say it is very dangerous to tow a vehicle backwards on a dolly?  What's the real deal?  I'll be towing my Sierra with a 26 ft Penske Rental Truck about 1200 miles.

Answer
I am lost as to why other "experts" say that towing vehicles backwards is dangerous...

In my daily job towing vehicles, I tow vehicles backwards every day...

Now tow dollies do have weight limits, and given your pickup, the heavy end is the front end (engine and transmission) while the back end usually has the open box...

Now you do have to make sure that the steering is locked (I do not mean just taking the key out), you have to tie or strap the steering wheel into a "LOCKED STRAIGHT AHEAD POSITION"

It's hard to explain it in detail without seeing it in person and I can not post pictures here unfortunately...

What does Penske say about towing the vehicle on the tow dolly?  They should have some guidelines on how to do it... Also I know that U-Haul also has a towing booklet or guide you should be able to get...
