Motorcycle Repair: Raptor 660r not starting, mechanic friend, motor brushes

Question
I have a 2004 raptor, the day I got it ran fine, the day after it would not start.

The starter relay is making a fast clicking noise, sometimes the engine turns over it turns about 3 to 4 times, and then the relay starts to click.

The starter spins fine when the inspection plate and cog connecting the starter and fly wheel are removed.

I removed the starter and showed it to my car mechanic friend, he said the bushes looked fine, he test it by putting a load on it (pressing it on a piece of wood, lol) it span fine.

If you put some booster cables on it turn over to the point it almost starts, but then the clicking. I know its not the battery because I have bought two the second one from my local yam dealer the correct one for the raptor.

I have tried two new batteries
New starter relay
New battery terminal cables
Cleaned all contacts.
Removed starter and cleaned

Any help would be great.

Answer
Hi Dee,

The usual causes for the problem are:

Weak or defective battery
Worn starter motor brushes
Worn or defective starter motor comutator
Worn or defective solenoid
Loose battery cable ends
Seized engine
Clutch out of adjustment or defective
Transmission in gear or defective

Remove the spark plugs and verify if starter will rotate engine freely without loaof cylinder compression.

If engine rotates easily, the problem is one or more of the other listed items.

It's possible to get a new battery, and other parts that are defective.

New batteries must be properly serviced before put into use. This requires charging for <24 hrs.

Verify that all battery/starter cable ends are clean and tightly fastened.
