Motorcycle Repair: Carb tuning, dyna low rider, gas milage

Question
here's my problem, first I'm that guy that always second guesses his work on carbs. The real problem is this: I have a 05 dyna low rider. I have taken the original pipes, cut the cross memeber out and welded the pipes to make straight/drag pipes out of them. so this makes the pipes go about 3-4 inches just past the point of where they are secured to the bike, to give an ideal of length. I do have power cones installed. I have installed a S&S shorty E carb and have jetted the intermidate jet with a .0285 or .028. the factory jet was just to rich. With that said, I have tuned it as per the instruction from s&s. I believe it is still on the rich side due to the fact that I have a little black on the spark plugs with some tan color on them as well. Also, when I start my bike, cold start, it fires fine, but I have the black smoke of richness coming out of the pipes until I turn the enrichner off. Not a whole lot, but enough that I can see and enough to have "soot" inside my pipes. What I have done since the inital carb tuning is the that I have turned the intermidate screw, ever so slowly, to the rich side past the initial tuning to eliminate sputtering on excel. I know this was because of a lean condition, not only was it sputtering like fuel starve on take off (when not to full op. temp.) but also due to loud popping from the muffler. This corrected the starving symtoms and for the most part the popping in the pipes. I have checked for leaks in the exhaust and have corrected those problems.  What I am currently doin now is ever so slowly turning off the accelerator screw to see if this will correct the problem. Otherwise, everything else is running satisfactory. Gas milage is some where between 30-40 something miles per gallon, if I am not "getting on the throttle and my bike has not other engine mod.'s than what I have mentioned. I am I doing the right thing or not? your diagnostics will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Lets go back to the begining. The intermedate screw you are refering to is the air/fuel mixture screw. It only affect the idle of the bike. Once you pull away you go to the intermediate jet and over 2500 to 3000 RPM you go the main jet.
When you pull the inrichner to start the bike you might get some smoke, becuae you are adding fuel to the bike.
The pump only give the bike a shot of gas when you get on the throttle so you dont bog down.
First, start he bike and let it warm up. Turn the pump off, by turning in the screw so it doesnt work.
Once the bike warms up slowly turnt he air/fuel mixture inward just untilt he bike starts to stumble and then back out about 1/4 of a turn. Now its set. Go for a ride, keeping the bike under 2500 RPMs to see how it runs on the intermediate jet. Ride about 10 miles and then check the plugs. If theya re black then you are to rich on the intermediate jet. If the bike coughs through the carb your are lean. Back firing to rich
Anytime you change jets, readjust the air/fuel mixute screw like I stated above.
Now, once you have the intermediate jet set go to the main jet. Again go for a ride, but now run over 3000 RPMs. Do the same as before, like on the intermediate jet.
Once you have the jets set, now open the pumper about 1 turn and go for a ride. shift fast andif it bogs open it another 1/2 turn. Keep doing this until you have it open enough to stop the bogging and you have it set
Good luck and happy riding
