Motorcycle Repair: replacement tranny, custom harley, gear ratios

Question
QUESTION: I’ve got an old school custom Harley built by a shop about 20 years ago.  Its got a old 4 speed kickstart that leaks like a siv and I’ve decided to replace it with a new 6 speed.  I know I’m making some of the diehards cringe…but it’s a decision that makes sense for me now.
Anyway, the question is this.  After having done research on a few of the popular tranny companies, I would like to know if you could recommend any make.  I’ve got a stock 80incher with open primary.  I looked at Revtech, Jims, Ultima and Baker and Milwaukee.  Most seem priced in the same range except for Baker.  Any recommendations?  I don’t wanna loose that awesome clunky surefooted gear changing of my 4 speed.  Will I with any of these aftermarkets?  I heard from someone once that Revtech is poor quality?  Is this true?  They seem to be pretty damn popular, and they have a 5 yr, 50k warranty.  They cant be that bad…can they? I’m probably not gonna go with the Baker, cuz the price is so high…but does its quality merit that skyhigh price?
So what would you put into your scoot?

Thanks

ANSWER: If it were me I would pay the extra price for the baker. Its a high quality trans. My next pick would be the revtech. I dont know much about the ultima or the milwaukee.
Good luck and happy riding

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks for your opinion.  Here's the followup.  You know, by any chance what the gear ratios are of an old 4 speed? I'm wondering, cuz I wanna know what the difference will be in performance when I get a few extra gears.  I called 3 shops, and they were all clueless and not interested in finding out.    Also...do you think a stock 80" needs a sixth gear?  I don't have a tac so I never knew what rpm I was doing.  Now that I'm upgrading...are 6 gears necessary on a stock engine that size.  I heard from some other guy that I should only worry about overdrive if I dealing with a big (100" or more) engine.  Is there any validity to that argument?

Answer
Your gear ratios are going to depend on what year and model your trans is,  but the following is close. 1st, 3-1, 2nd, 1.82-1, 3rd, 1.23-1 and 4th 1-1. Its nto whether you need a 6th gear, its what type of riding you do. It will work quit well if you ride alot of freeways. Lowers the RPMs about 300. If you do mostly in town riding then you dont need it
Good luck and happy riding
