Motorcycle Repair: Stripped oil drain plug threads, kawasaki ninja 250, oil drain plug

Question
I changed the oil in my 2002 Kawasaki Ninja 250 today and the drain plug threads are stripped.  What is the best way to repair this problem?  Should I use an oversize self-tapping plug, helicoil, or should I re-tap the hole and use a bigger plug?

Answer
Brandon,
this is a matter of opinion as people have had luck
with all the different methods. Helicoils can be
great but need to be tapped as straight as possible
to prevent gasket leaks. The tap should be coated with
grease and removed frequently to remove metal filings.
The oversize plug is basically a tapered tap, it might
work but make sure it does not enter the drain hole
too far. Compare it to your old plug to make sure.
There are also some rubber type plugs that you could
check out at an auto store. Some people have had success
with those.
Be careful making the hole too big, you never know
how much metal there is around it.
Drain plugs only need a half turn or so to snug them up
but a torque wrench is best and maybe 12 ft lbs. or
check your manual for specs. Good luck!
