Motorcycle Repair: front fork leak, fork leg, fork seal

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 Softtail Standard and have a leak out of the front left fork, can you tell me how to tear it down and replace the seal or whatever it is causing the leak? I'd really appreciate it.

ANSWER: First you need to drain the fork oil. There is a drain plug on the side of the fork. Jack the bike up off the floor and remove the top cap. Remove the front wheel and fender. Looking under the fork, inside, you will see a allen head screw. Remove it. Slide the dust cover up and out of the way. Under it you will see a clip which holds the seal in. remove it. Slide the lower off the upper fork leg and replace the seal. Put it back together the way you took it apart

QUESTION: I'm sorry, Tony is my husband and he isn't good with computers and I have been asking the questions and I haven't explained it correctly, he said the leak  is under the top triple tree, he already replaced the very top O ring. Thanks for your help.

Answer
There are only a couple of places for forks to leak. At the o-ring at the top, between the lower and upper fork, bottom of the fork and the drain plug. If its leaking at the top then it has to be the top cap. There is nothing to leak under the triple tree unless the fork has a hole in it. Your fork seal might be leaking and spraying the fork oil upward.
