Motorcycle Repair: REVTEC STARTING, jackshaft, ultima 6

Question
Read your answer ref: REVTEC and compression releases, very interesting, I have that problem and I agree that the releases are the answer , I would like to know exactly how to set up the Jackshaft. I am running thw old style 9 tooth pinion. I have replaced the bushings in inner and outter primary, install jack shaft, it engages ok but will not snap back as book says it should. I have a 1997 FLHTC with a 110 REVTEC with Ultima 6 speed. I know that this all should not matter whan it comes to the jack shaft. I have went thru 2 ring and pinions, 3 batteries[ burnt hot post off and numerous starters] real problem.

Answer
Get a parts diagram from the HD parts book.  Did you install the pinion spring in the correct place?  Did you install the jackshaft coupling correctly?  It has a long and short end if you look at the distance from the snap ring inside, to the end of the coupling.  Pinion gear should bottom out against snap ring.  And pinion spring pushes pinion gear out towards clutch ring gear not back towards starter as you might think.
