Land Rover Repair: park does not engage on 02 Disco II, automatic gearbox, filter transmission

Question
Hi John, I just shipped my car to Italy from Hawaii and upon receipt of my vehicle (2.5 weeks of transit) everything works perfectly except when shutting down the vehicle down, park doesn't work. I can use the E brake to keep it from rolling but I'm curious as to what the cause of this might be. I don't know if changing the filter/transmission oil would help. Looking for any input.
Thanks in advance,
Corey

Answer
Hi Corey,

sounds like the gear position switch needs adjustment.  You'll probably need to find a LR dealer to do the adjustment as I believe it needs a special tool.

I've also heard about a 'C'clip that can pop off and cause strange shifting problems, its found under the shifter panel and holds the outer cable in place.

Just in case, check your fuses 12, 21, 24 and 25.

From the service manual (xyz switch?):
Gear position switch
A gear position switch is located on the automatic gearbox and is used to inform the BCU of the gear selector lever position. The BCU has four sensing inputs from the gear position switch contacts W, X, Y, Z, which are used to determine the gearbox drive status at any particular instance. The BCU gives an output corresponding to the gearbox status derived from the gear position switch inputs.

If you have no choice, you can try to fix this yourself.  My advice is to go to www.discoweb.org and do a search for XYZ switch.  There are many threads but the one to look for was started by skrach77.

Best of luck,
JohnMc
