Motorcycle Repair: 79 Sportster Valve adjustment, valve adjustment, pushrod

Question
I need to know the right way to adjust the valve lash on this bike.  The bike is making some noise that sounds like it's coming from the heads.  I want to check the adjustment first

First, the motor has to be cold to adjust them. Lift the bike up so you can rotate the motor. Stating with the front exhaust, rotate the motor so the lifter is all the say at the bottom of the stroke. Loosen the lock and adjust the pushrod so that the pushrod just turns between your finger. tighten the locknut. Do this for each pushrod.
