Motorcycle Repair: 2000 Honda Magna VF750 wont start, honda magna, starter solenoid

Question
I turn on the ignition. All but the headlight turn on.Even the high beam doesn't work. I hit the start and nothing. NO click. Same feel as when the run/stop switch is off.I tried boosting with spare battery .still not even a click. I have the Honda shop manual and have tried a few tests. Battery direct to starter , and it turns. All fuses were checked ok. I am at a loss why it won't start and the headlight stopped at the same time.

Answer
Hi Al,

Check battery condition and charge. Check overal voltage with a multimeter (VOM). Check individual battery cell specific gravity with a Hydrometer designed for use with motorcycles. Charge or replace battery accordingly. The battery must be in good condition and fully charged for accurate electrical test results.

Check the headlight bulb filaments for continuity by connecting 12VDC to the bulb directly. A good bulb will light with voltage applied to the bulb's body (ground) and to each filament terminal. Clean bulb of prints after testing.

Trace voltage in headlight circuit from bulb, back to battery and ground.

Check the ignition switch for proper operation.

Check the starter solenoid for proper operation.

Check fuses.
