Motorcycle Repair: My First Motorcycle, fork seals, style filters

Question
QUESTION: Hello there i recently purchased a 82 maxim xj 650. when i picked it up ran perfect lots of power great response ect ect. get it home hard to start runs rough all the good stuff to make me feel like i bought a lemon. only cylinders 1 3 and 4 were contributing?? manifolds were getting warm. so check compression on all 4 120-125 all cylinders. great spark so it has to be the carbs right?? removed the carbs and cleaned found number 2 jet sitting in the bottom of the bowl. restart runs better takes a long time to get warm flushed tank out and added a conditioner now number one is the cylinder that is not contributing. i think i am still having carb problems again. this engine has straight through exhaust and all the plugs are well carbond up so i know it is over fueling choke is operational. i am wondering if i should attempt to clean these carbs out again but when i do put a new set of jets in?? how do i know what size to go with i also want to install a set of K & N style filters and by the looks of it ill have to re jet the carb all over again. i just don't know where to go with carbs i work as a ford technician and carbs for me are a thing of the past. or so i thought. i do have a manual on the way but i just cant wait to get to work on this thing. also any info on replacing front fork seals and how much oil to apply would be awesome my dealer (Yamaha) just told me that one liter would be enough for the fork. :S for some reason that really doesn't cut it for me. anyway thanks for your time and hope to hear from you soon

ANSWER: Hi jim
No No NO....DONT GO BY 1 LITER IN THE FORKS!!!!I know that you are anxious to ride but in the manual the is a fluid level that you have a fork fluid gauge.Jim where are you located?XJ'S  have the worst carbs on the planet to get adjusted right. The pipes are always going to give you a problem being  that there  is no baffels, it will make it run lean. I believe that the best thing is to do is wait for the manual and being a tech you know that.By the way what kind of conditioner did you add?

QUESTION: i used a forte fuel system cleaner automotive based cleaner and pulled my carbs off again and checked for a plugged jet nothing found. i have a pair of mufflers ordered for my bike. now with the k&n style filter good or bad?? the stock air box is okay i guess but the darn lid is missing i cant seem to find anywhere. that is why i was thinking about going to the cone style filters. My manual is on back order and i just dunno when it will get here for gosh sakes. so in the meantime i am just tinkering with what i know. the exhaust when i got the motorcycle was ripped right off at your feet and now i am rebuilding the H pipe and when my mufflers are here ill be set. what is a realistic exhaust back pressure. i know my non exsistant manual will not tell em this and what jets do i look at changing when my plugs are over fueled. thanks for the reply, oh yeah i am in rocky mountain house alberta canada, and really have no one around here that rides or knows anything about motorbikes. and the yamaha dealership here there not very trustworthy.
