Motorcycle Repair: Sportster Lowering, rear shock, lowering kit

Question
I have a friend of mine who just bought a 1993 1200cc Sportster.  Come to find out the bike is a little to tall for her and needs to be lowered.  Guys have told her to go to a 10 inch rear shock.  I checked on the Harley Website and they only sell shocks that are an inch lower. 11 3/4 I think.  My questions are as follows.  Do you need to buy a front end lowering kit, or can you adjust front forks down?  Plus is lowering a bike with a 10 inch shock safe?  I think she needs the bike lowered about 3 inches so she can stand flat footed when she stops.   Thanks   Jake

Answer
You can lower the bike as low as you want without hurting safty. the problem you will run into is the rear tire hitting the fender. So you have to be careful how low you go. If you lower the rear you should lower the front. They make kits for this. There is no adjustment for the front forks to make them lower.
Good luck and happy riding
