Motorcycle Repair: Vulcan 800 problems, safety switch, mile trip

Question
Mark - this is a mirror of a question from Jeff on 10/30/05.  Same model, year and exact same problems (original question copied below).  You presented quite a few possibilities without seeing the bike.  Did you ever get additional info from Jeff as a follow up to your suggestions?  Thanks, Craig

Original question:Hey Mark,
I have a 96 Vulcan 800 Classic, runs great.  Just got back from a 1000 mile trip, let it sit for a month, went out for a sunday drive, started right up, idled great in neutral, then when ready to take off, put into gear, opened clutch and engine died.  and keeps doing the same, everytime.  Do you have any clue what's going on?  Please Help if you can?  I appreciate it, and you service.
Thanks.
 Jeff

Answer
Hi Craig,

I suspect the clutch needs attention, or a safety switch is not working properly.
