Motorcycle Repair: 84 Honda XL600R, cylinder compression, valve clearances

Question
Hi Mark

I just purchased this bike, the 3rd day after bringing it home it started right up after 7-10 kicks.  Now it is 5 days since that first day I had it running and I can't get it to start at all.  I noticed the battery is a little weak would this have anything to do with it? It has also leaked out quite a bit of oil. Is there a trick to getting an older bike like this started easier?  I'd appreciate an help or advice.  Thanks  Mike

Answer
Hi Michael,

Remove and inspect the appearance of the spark plugs. Clean or replace wet or sooty plugs and re-try starting.

If the plugs are wet or carbon fouled, the carbs may need tuned or the ignition may be faulty.

I'm not clear on where oil is leaking from. Likely a worn or defective oil seal or gasket.

There's no tricks to starting. Performing periodic maintenance is recommended. See Owner's manual and Service manual for periodic maintenance charts and intel.

Check cylinder compression and valve clearances. Both must be within service limits for the carburetor to function properly and for the engine to start and run well.

Check fuel system for evidence of varnished fuel. The carb may need thoroughly cleaned if the XL was stored for periods of time.
