Motorcycle Repair: no spark, regulator rectifier, harley dealer

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1987 FLTC and I was riding it and it just cut out. It cranks and I know its getting fuel because I can smell it.  What would be causing no spark?  Ignition coil?
Any help appreciated.
Chris
ANSWER: More likely than the coil is your ignition pickup or sensor located behind the "points" cover in the middle of your cam cover.(Right side of the motor)

QUESTION: How would I test the pickup?  Do you think it could be the regulator/rectifier?  I know its puting out volts to charge the battery.
Thanks
Chris

Answer
You can check both the module and the sensor.  Usually the sensor is the faulty part.  Regulator/rectifier is only for your charging system not ignition.  I would have to write a book here to explain the tests so it's best to just get a service manual.  The manual also has component locations and pictures of test procedures.  You need manual #99483-90 from your Harley dealer.  If they don't have it they can order it and it should take less than a week to get.
