Motorcycle Repair: 86 VT700C Shadow Electrical problem, regulator rectifier, 12 volt battery

Question
We have 86 VT700C Shadow that will not keep a battery charge. We just installed a new maintenance free 12 volt battery.  The Owner's Manual states the bike has a generator, but there is no reference in the book as to where the generator is located or how to check if it is good.  The batter just isn't keeping it's charge.  What advise do you have in regard to troubleshooting this problem?  Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
Hi Judy,

I suspect the charging system is not working properly. The cause may be a defective alternator, defective regulator/rectifier, defective electrical connector or conductor, or other related component.

Your Shadow has an alternator. Generators were used prior to the mid seventies, generally.

Owner's manuals are helpful for basic maintenance information, safety information, and acquainting you with the controls and features of your Shadow.

Get a copy of the Service Manual to learn about maintaining, testing, and repairing your Shadow. Find manuals at your local public library or purchase manuals at:
