Motorcycle Repair: spark, turning but not firing, adjustable pushrods, retarted

Question
QUESTION: Mike,
I made sure all timing marks are aligned on cam, pinion and oil gear, checked coil, checked for a spark (laid it on the heads and I have one) module OK, turning but not firing. Wondered about VOES - timing plate set at centre. Baffled.
ANSWER: Are you getting gas pumped into the carb? Also, timing plate should be set a little retarted to get it to start.

QUESTION: gas coming in, retarded plate but no joy. Can I check the plate (how ?) and how do I check the VOES ? If I have a spark, does that mean the plate is OK ?

Answer
If your VOES switch was not working the bike would run correctly so thats not it.
You never said if you have adjustable pushrods, but if you do if they are to tight the bike will not start. Also, if you have hydrolics lifters, did you bleed them?
