Motorcycle Repair: Charging system, stator rotor, bare wire

Question
I have a custom built shovel. Old style bobber stripped down to the bare bone needs. The electrical is a very simple system (Battery, stator, rotor, headlight, led tail light). I have  a oddesy gel/sealed battery, I have had the battery go bad internally twice. The regulator has also gone bad. I think, if memory serves, that i am running a 1978 style stator (2 prong). I have checked the stator and my ohm readings seems to be a bit off, book says 0.2 to 0.4 ohm. i am getting a reading of 0.5 to 0.6 ohms. I further checked the system and the out put while running at 1000 rpm is around 21 volts and around 60 volts at around 3000 rpm which is in specs. however when I check the battery while running I am not getting  ~14 volts (battery is low at this point) but I assumed that I should still be getting a positive reading however when i rev the volts drop, so i am not charging at this point. I have had this problem before and not sure what the problem is exactly. I get it fixed for a time then it poops back up. Seems to happen after i have been hot-dogging, running hard and fast high revs etc... could this be part of the problem (blowing out the regulator)? any clues that could help me track down or diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
regards
Vic

Answer
Your stator should not show any OHMs from prong in plug to ground and .2-.4 prong to prong. It sounds like your stator is shorting out the regulator. You might have a bare wire on the stator and it just touching the case at times.
I would pull the stator and do an inspection on it
Good luck and happy riding
