Motorcycle Repair: 1998 1100 ace shadow, rear brake caliper, wheel bearings

Question
i have a noise that sounds like the bearings are coming out of the back wheel....took it to a honda dealer that said they couldn't find anything and paid for 2 hours ...and all they gave me was a list of items that could be done.....tuneup-new tires...etc...then another place that said the bearings looked good....but the noise still happens and i'm afraid to go long distant....doesn't happen all the time but is getting more and more frequent.any help?

Answer
Hi Norm,

I agree with you that something is not right. I would need to inspect the motorcycle to diagnose the problem.

Do you feel any vibrations or anything unusual while riding?

Did the shop techs remove the wheels and inspect the bearings? Final drive assy.?

You could perform troubleshooting by the following:

Raise and support the rear end. Rotate the wheel slowly by hand while listening and feeling for any vibrations or sounds, etc... You may hear the brake rotor spinning or passing between the brake pads, or the final drive gears meshing a bit, but that's about it.

Ride around awhile and avoid using the rear brakes. Hopefully the sound will happen while you ride. At some point, stop riding and inspect the rear brake caliper and final drive assy. for excessive heat.

If the caliper is dragging or sticking, it will generate heat. If the final drive unit is low on oil of failing, it too will get hotter than normal.

You can check wheel bearings with the rear wheel removed. Simply place a finger in the bearings and rotate the bearings. If you feel any resistance or anything other than smooth rolling, the brearing or race is defective.

Wheels spacers and bushings wear and may cause other parts to wear and make noise.
