Motorcycle Repair: jetted R-1, kn air filter, airbox

Question
I have a 1999 R-1, it seems to run a little rough. Sometimes it releasing gas out of the exhaust(verylittle). I let it warm up and still the same. I talk to a mechanic and he said maybe too rich or lean. I hinged the tank and removed the KN air filter. So i could take a look at the spark plugs. but i cranked it and it ran smooth. Do i need to modify the air box for more air or reduce the amount of gas? I ride around town alot, not much on the highway. Which is best solution for my problem?

Answer
Hi lee,

I would have to be present and perform diagnostic tests to know whats happening with the air-fuel mixtures. I can't tell you what needs to be done without inspecting the problem.

Tuning carburetors is not an easy task. I recommend having an experienced Yamaha tech perform the tuning for you.

Tuning may be simply increasing air flow into the airbox to correct an overly rich A/F mix, or it may be more involved.
