Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Vulcan 500, motorcycle batteries, detials

Question
I have a 2003 Vulcan 500.  I replaced the battery thinking that was the problem for not starting, and that wasnt the problem.  It doesnt turn the lights on or anything. its dead.  any suggestions on where to start?

Answer
Hi Karen,

Test the battery voltage with a multimeter. Check individual battery cell electrolyte with a hydrometer designed for motorcycle batteries. Charge or replace the battery accordingly.

If battery tests good, remove the spark plugs and inspect them for evidence of fouling. Clean or replace plugs accordingly.

Try a one second burst of starting fluid into the airbox with throttle wide open and engine cranking. Close throttle after spraying.

Avoid using the starter motor longer than 15 seconds at a time to prevent buring the windings.

I'm trying to diagnose a problem without being present to perfrom tests. I could go on for several paragraphs describeing the entire process of troubleshooting.

Instead, can you provide any additional detials and history of this motorcycle? For example, was it stored over the winter and just being started etc...? Any history of repairs? Any modifications from stock?

I return tech information files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested and explained in my instructions.
