Motorcycle Repair: recommended oil??, check oil level, clutch problems

Question
I have a 1985 yamaha xj700n maxim and it is an air cooled engine, recently i put an oil cooler on it and i was wondering what type of oil you suggest to put in it now?? 10w-30 , 10w-40 ect. and also when i start to add oil is there a procedure to re-fill with the addition of the oil cooler?   Thank-you for your advice.    Stephen

Answer
Hi Stephen,

I use and recommend AMSOIL 100% synthetic products. In any case, read the oil container label for the correct (viscosity) weight oil to use.

If you use a synthetic oil, make sure the label indicates for use with motorcyle engines. Some synthetic oils cause clutch problems.

For most all of the USA's temperatures, you can use a 10W30 or 10W40 oil.

Some oil may reside in the oil cooler when servicing the oil and filter. No Pproblem. Change oil and filter in the usual manner.

Some additional oil above the factory specs may be required to compensate for the capacity of the oil cooler. Add oil,  check oil level, and fill accordingly in the usual manner.
