Motorcycle Repair: Didnt Winterize, motorcycle battery, volt battery

Question
I am in the military and did not get to properly prepare my Suzuki DR 200 prior to deploying for 18 months. Needless to say the battery is dead and it has been sitting with the gas in it for more than a year. Can you give me a quick overview of what I should do now so my bike will run again. Thank you!

Answer
Change the oil anyway.  Drain the gas from the carburetor bowl.  Clean the bowl if there's any sludge or a varnish-like coating.  If there is a varnish or sludge you will have to unscrew the little brass jets and clean the pinholes in them with a small piece of wire.  Put some clean fresh gas in the carb bowl before reinstalling it.  Put a new spark plug in and the battery after slow charging it.  You can charge it right in the bike.  Use a motorcycle battery charger that charges at a 1 amp rate or less.  A twelve volt battery is fully charged when it has about 12.8 volts to it.  But it will charge up to about 13.3 volts.  If the battery has white inside the cells or won't take a charge you will have to replace it.  Check the air filter and air box for mice nests and acorns before trying to start the bike.
