Motorcycle Repair: dax timing, honda dax, compression stroke

Question
hi, i was wondering if you could give me a tip on how to adjust the timing of a honda dax st50. not sure what year model it is.thanks in advance.....bong

Answer
Bong, the timing is adjusted through the slots in the flywheel, by changing the point gap. If you look carefully at when the points open, the marks on the flywheel should align with the F mark on the flywheel. If the points are dirty, they should be cleaned with a small file, then be sure to remove any filings/grit from the point surfaces. Then, you adjust the gap with a flat blade screwdriver, after loosening the hold down screws just enough so you can move the point plate without forcing it. When the F mark aligns and the points just begin to open, then the timing is correct.

Always check the valve clearances on these engines as they tend to close down, losing compression.  .05mm (.002") is the gap, when valves are closed at the T mark alignment on compression stroke.
